ORIGINAL CONTRIBUTION Mediterranean Diet, Alzheimer Disease, and Vascular Mediation

چکیده
Design, Setting, Patients, and Main Outcome Measures: A case-control study nested within a community-based cohort in New York, NY. Adherence to the MeDi (0to 9-point scale with higher scores indicating higher adherence) was the main predictor of AD status (194 patients with AD vs 1790 nondemented subjects) in logistic regression models that were adjusted for cohort, age, sex, ethnicity, education, apolipoprotein E genotype, caloric intake, smoking, medical comorbidity index, and body mass index (calculated as weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared). We investigated whether there was attenuation of the association between MeDi and AD when vascular variables (stroke, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, heart disease, lipid levels) were simultaneously introduced in the models (which would constitute evidence of mediation). Results: Higher adherence to the MeDi was associated with lower risk for AD (odds ratio, 0.76; 95% confidence interval, 0.67-0.87; P .001). Compared with subjects in the lowest MeDi tertile, subjects in the middle MeDi tertile had an odds ratio of 0.47 (95% confidence interval, 0.29-0.76) and those at the highest tertile an odds ratio of 0.32 (95% confidence interval, 0.17-0.59) for AD (P for trend .001). Introduction of the vascular variables in the model did not change the magnitude of the association.

متن کاملORIGINAL CONTRIBUTION Mediterranean Diet and White Matter Hyperintensity Volume in the Northern Manhattan Study
W HITE MATTER HYPERintensities (WMHs) v i s ib le on T2weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are markers of chronic small vessel damage. Although they are often seen in people who are aging normally, WMHs are associated with vascular risk factors, including smoking, diabetes mellitus, high blood pressure, and dyslipidemia; correlate with small vessel damage in other organs, such as the eye ...
متن کاملComparison of visual evoked potential changes in patients with alzheimer, vascular dementia and minimal cognitive Impairment with healthy people: a case-control study
Background: Alzheimer dementia as the most common cause of dementia is a chronic, progressive, irreversible and incurable disease. The second most common cause of dementia after Alzheimer is vascular dementia. One of the systems involved in dementia is the visuospatial system and visual evoked potential (VEP) can be one of the diagnostic methods for this disease. Therefore, the present study ai...
متن کاملMediterranean diet and cognitive decline in women with cardiovascular disease or risk factors.
BACKGROUND Cardiovascular disease and vascular risk factors increase rates of cognitive impairment, but very little is known regarding prevention in this high-risk group. The heart-healthy Mediterranean-type dietary pattern may beneficially influence both vascular and cognitive outcomes. OBJECTIVES We examined the association between Mediterranean-style diet and cognitive decline in women wit...
متن کاملOriginal Contribution Relation of the Traditional Mediterranean Diet to Cerebrovascular Disease in a Mediterranean Population
The authors aimed to evaluate the association of the traditional Mediterranean diet and major food groups with incidence of and mortality from cerebrovascular disease (CBVD) in a Mediterranean population. The study population was a cohort of 23,601 participants from the Greek segment of the EPIC Study (European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition) who were free of cardiovascular...
